Former Wallaby John Eales visits Marist

The highlight of this week’s assembly was our special guest, renowned former Australian rugby player John Eales.

Mr Eales talked about his experiences at Marist College Ashgrove where his rugby coach was our Headmaster Mr Sidorko.

He said that when we are in school we never fully appreciate just how good a Marist education is and the opportunities that we are given i.e.sporting, academia and performing arts etc.

He said that now as a grown man he has a real perspective on life that his Marist education provided him with. Mr Eales then went on to discuss the nature of success and how real success only ever comes from things that you are really passionate about. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of always being proud of the fact that your idea of success may be different to others and that these kinds of differences should be celebrated. Mr Eales said that in life no one is without failures, and its always okay to fail as long as we are willing to get back up again and have another try.

Mr Eales also talked about values. He discussed the need to be true to our values and to be sure about what it is that we stand for. He said that it was his Marist education that provided this kind of grounding for him. To articulate this he shared the quote:
“I can’t hear what your saying, who you are is too loud.”
emphasising that it is our values and behaviour that says the most about who we really are.

In closing, Mr Eales articulated that the most important ingredient of anyone who is successful is composure. This is the ability to be level-headed with oneself and one’s life and is about “making the best decisions in the worst of times”. Mr Eales finished by drawing this statement back to our faith and how it is ultimately faith that provides this certainty and composure in our lives.
