Year 7 Camp

Year 7 Camp

We are thrilled to share with you the wonderful experience that our Year 7 students had during their recent camp. The camp was filled with exciting activities that were both fun and educational, providing the students with a unique opportunity to explore the natural wonders of our coastal region.

One of the highlights of the camp was beach fishing. The students were taught how to bait their hooks and cast their lines, and they had a great time trying to catch fish from the shore. They also enjoyed snorkelling and exploring the underwater world of the coast. The students were amazed by the diversity of marine life they saw, and many of them overcame their fears of being in the water.

Surfing was another activity that the students loved. Many of them had never tried surfing before, but with the help of experienced instructors, they were able to catch some waves and ride them back to shore. It was a thrilling experience for everyone involved, and the students were cheering each other on and having a great time.

The Indigenous information session was another highlight of the camp. The students learned about the culture and history of the local indigenous people, and they even got to tag a boomerang with their names. This activity helped them to gain a deeper appreciation of the land on which they were camping and to understand the important role that indigenous culture plays in our community.

Finally, the coastal explorer hike was an unforgettable experience for the students. They hiked along the coast, stopping to observe the flora and fauna and learn about the geological features of the area. They saw breathtaking views of the ocean and cliffs, and the hike provided a wonderful opportunity for the students to connect with nature and each other.

Overall, Year 7 camp was an incredible experience that the students will remember for years to come. The activities were fun and engaging, and they provided a unique opportunity for the students to learn about themselves, each other, and the world around them. We would like to thank all the teachers and staff who worked hard to make this camp a success.

Reflections from Conway House

At Year 7 Camp you get to meet new people and challenge yourself to do things that you may not have done before. It is a great experience for people that are new to Marist to make new friends. For returning students, you get to meet the new Marist students who you have similar interests with. You get to challenge yourself with activities that you may have never done before. Overall camp is a great experience that everyone at Marist is very lucky to have.

My favourite activity was snorkelling - we saw a pod of banjo sharks and a friendly mantaray. Cooking for our group was a new experience using the Trangia stove and preparing food for 30 boys. Washing up was tiring as we had to make sure the pans were shiny-shiny.

I made new friends by solving challenges together - such as sharing a tent full of sand, walking in the hot afternoon, and playing cricket together before dinner.

A huge thank you to the teachers and group leaders from Land’s Edge - they were fantastic at sharing important skills and uplifting everyone’s spirits.

Since 1968, Marist Canberra has been a part of and had its footprints on the land of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples. As a College, we acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which we stand. We pay our respects to them and for their care of the land. May we walk gently and respectfully upon the land. We are, as Marists, an inclusive and welcoming community. We acknowledge that all are created in the image of our loving God and called to live our lives glorifying the Lord. People of all faiths, genders, sexualities, and cultures are therefore welcome and respected equally in the Marist Catholic community.
