What's On - 24 September 2025

The College was delighted to welcome two Marist Brothers this week, Br Robert Speare and Br Paul Bhatti, for a tour and a chance to connect with staff, including our Headmaster Matthew Hutchison.

Br Robert served at Marist Canberra from 1977–1980 and 1984–1988. He has spent the past eight years in Timor-Leste, working in schools, teaching English, and supporting religious formation. Now retired from teaching, he resides in the Brothers’ community in North Sydney.

Br Paul, a former school Principal in Pakistan, is currently completing a Master of Counselling at Notre Dame University in Sydney. His reflections were extraordinary, highlighting the limited educational opportunities available to students in Pakistan and reminding us how fortunate our boys are to enjoy excellent facilities, abundant resources, and a wide range of curricular and co-curricular opportunities. Br Paul also shared that his current priority for the Brothers’ school in Sargodha is securing access to fresh water, a humbling reminder of the challenges faced elsewhere. His words were powerful and deeply moving, reinforcing just how truly blessed we are at Marist College Canberra.

Peace Moments is the title for our Marist Association family gathering at the Cowra Japanese gardens in October. This is a family friendly event. The gardens remind us of the importance of reconciliation and peacemaking in our communities and in our world. Peacemaking efforts in countries like Australia and Japan originate from a determination to secure peace for our families and to avoid nuclear holocaust in the future. The example of young Sadako, a resident of Hiroshima, crafting paper cranes to inspire peace as she suffered the debilitating effects of war, along with the efforts of young people committed to peace and social justice in our local communities remind us to bring Mary, Mother of Peace, to the brokenness of our world, offering prayer, healing and hope.

We will gather for morning tea at 10am before a tour of the gardens followed by a Peace Moment prayer and a shared lunch. Participants will depart the gardens around 2pm.

All parents and sons are invited to a special fundraising event called Constant Kick on Tuesday 21 October from 5.30-7.00pm on Lindwall Oval. We will be keeping the ball alive for 90 minutes while we raise awareness for mental wellbeing and funds to support HOME in Queanbeyan.

HOME seeks to provide a safe, loving, and long-term home for twenty men and women living with an enduring mental illness who are at risk of homelessness. You can watch a short film about its impact here. 

Tickets are $5 each and include a sausage and drink to keep the energy up.

Uniform and Outfit Requirements
All boys will require their House sports uniform (House shirt, PE shorts, and trainers). 

Some Houses also have special outfits for their singing performance. Boys dressing up must also have their House sports uniform (either underneath or to change into before Ball Games).

Francois and Haydon:
Years 4 and 5 – Jeans and T-shirt (any colour)
Year 6 – Optional tutu for performance

McMahon and Patrick: Sunglasses, cap backwards (boys will still need their Marist hats), baggy clothes (think NSync)

Monday 24 November will be our Orientation Day for all new students who have accepted positions in the Junior School to start in 2026. Please note this is a change of date. This will also be the Orientation Day for all current Year 6 Marist students who are continuing their studies in Year 7 at Marist in 2026, as well as those joining the College in Year 7 next year.

Friday 28 November will be our Junior School 2025 Activity Day for students.

Monday 1 December will be our 2025 Junior School Lunch on the Lawn from 1pm until 2.30pm. Parents will be invited to attend this event. Further details will be sent to families in Term 4.

Friday 6 December will be our 2025 Junior School Presentation Day and Farewell Ceremony for Year 6. Midday until 1.30pm in Marcellin Hall. All Junior School families are welcome to attend. Year 6 families are encouraged to attend. Parents of Award winners will be notified in advance.

Thank you firstly to all Year 5 and 6 teachers who supported Rostrum this year.

It was extraordinary at how far Henry progressed, presenting a new four-minute speech in the ACT Final last night.

Out of 99 schools competing, each school put through one student. Last night Henry was in the top nine and would definitely be in the top four of those according to our scoring.

He excelled and had the audience captivated. Henry also had a great support crew from Year 5 boys and their parents as well as family and school staff. What a community we have.

Huge thank you to Sheridan who has worked with Henry leading up to the final and the Year 5 teachers who listened to his speech yesterday.

Junior School Family Service Task

Thank you to the families who have already handed in their Family Service Task bag to the Junior School front office, your generosity is greatly appreciated. Hospital care bags can be dropped to the Junior School front office anytime from now until the end of the term.

Marist College Canberra has partnered with CIT to give Senior Students exclusive access to short courses in hospitality. Perfect for getting job-ready, learning new skills, or adding to your resume.

These courses give you the chance to secure a spot in a class made up of Marist students only. If minimum enrolments aren’t met, places may then be opened to students from other Canberra Catholic Education schools.

Our opening night of this year’s Little Brothers Production was a huge success! Students from Years 4–9 have joined forces with St Clare’s and Merici College to bring the hit musical Bugsy Malone to life.

Tickets are now on sale for the Senior Drama Production of 'Dead Poets Society’.

The talented Year 11 drama class have been working hard and rehearsing the play, based on the 1989 film of the same name and adapted for the stage by the wonderful Ms Johnson. If you’ve seen the film and fell in love with this the story and memorable characters, this production is definitely something you should come and experience! Please note, the production is not suitable for young audiences due to its mature themes and content.

Want to know more? Step into the halls of Welton Academy, an elite all boys preparatory boarding school with stern classes and sterner rules. With a new English teacher at the school, a group of students find themselves inspired to ‘seize the day’ and rebel against ‘labels’ and the ‘status quo’ and begin to view their studies and their lives from a more meaningful perspective. This 17ThreadsCo production, directed by Loukas Cramer and Eddie Murphy, will hopefully leave you inspired as our charismatic cast aim to have you laughing (and crying) by the time the curtains close.

The performances for this exciting new play will take place from 15 - 17 October in Veritas Theatre.

Please join us for the Presentation Night to celebrate the 2025 Winter Season on 10 September at 6pm in the Senior School Hall.

All boys should wear their full winter uniform (including blazer). Families are welcome to attend.
