Junior School Curriculum - Performing Arts
Students require a robust music education to optimally achieve their physical, emotional and cognitive potential as holistic learners who are sensitive to the needs of others.
Therefore, every student at Marist College receives a rigorous and sequential music education because it is a critical component in our mission to foster Strong Minds and Gentle Hearts.
All Year 5 students will be involved in learning an instrument next year. Some Year 6 students will continue with the program based on their choices at the end of this year.
Year 5 Music Immersion Program in 2023
What’s been happening recently?
Current Year 4 students recently watched a performance by the Royal Military College’s Pep Band. The musicians are some of the best in Australia and the world and are regularly invited to international events across the globe as well as their official duties here in Australia.
What’s happening next?
Next year, all Year 5 students will have the Music Immersion Program as part of their weekly academic schedule. The boys will not miss any class time as this is one of their core timetabled classes at the College.
What will next year’s students start with?
Next year, all Year 5 students will take part in a series of activities and tests to help staff match them with the best possible instruments. The process involves listening and singing, games, physical challenges and lots of great fun activities. Students will also be introduced to the instruments and submit their preferences.
When are instruments issued?
All Year 5 students will have their instruments issued in Week 5 after all the initial instrumental matching activities have concluded. Students will be issued with their booklet and cleaning equipment, and parents will receive an instrument care guide.
Our expert team of teachers will show them the first steps in caring for their instruments. Students will be expected to practice setting up and packing up their instruments in the first week they have them.
Year 6 Music Immersion Program in 2023
All current Year 5 students were issued with an enrolment form for Year 6 Music Immersion activities. A copy of the form is available here.
All Year 6 students in 2023 have the option of continuing their instrumental studies and can even join one of our award-winning classroom bands: the Junior Premiers or the Junior All Stars.
Next year, Year 6 students who have elected to continue will receive notice of their private or group lesson time and will commence with their specialist instrumental teacher. They will attend their concert band class as part of their weekly timetable from Week 2 onwards.
Year 6 students in 2023 will be issued with their instrument in their first private or group lesson for the year if they haven’t already kept hold of it at the end of this year.
