Service Expo
At our recent Service Expo the students were able to engage with presenters from 26 different community and charity organisations. Represented were groups from within Marist such as Marist Justice and Solidarity, Vinnies and Off-cuts as well as groups from the wider community, including Catholic Mission, CatholicCare, Reach for Nepal, Red Cross and Lifeline. The aim of the Expo was for students to meet people from these organisations, learn about their focus and work, and have a conversation about potential service opportunities.
Another element of the day was the House Assemblies. Each House organised for a guest speaker from their House Charity to come along and share with the boys the aims of the organisation and to help them understand the impact they are and can make in the lives of others.
Following both events, the boys completed a reflection on what they had learnt and undertook to make a commitment to a specific form of service. This was done with their House Group leader, and it is anticipated that there will be further conversations with the aim of having the boys follow through with hands-on service.
I encourage parents to have a conversation with their sons about the Service Expo, what they learnt, what they are curious about and even look for service opportunities that they might undertake as a family.
There was plenty of fun at lunchtime with the senior students organising a range of stalls and activities for everyone to enjoy. The money raised goes to our Australia Marist Solidarity appeal.
On behalf of everyone, I thank all the staff who are currently involved in service groups and a particular thank you to Mr Nicholas Lansdown-Weir for his organisation of the day.
